Bono
Lashawna Green 09/18/12 Essay #1 Paul David Hewson aka: ââ¬Å"Bono Bono gives other activist and singers a run for their money. Being the lead singer of the pop rock sensation U2 comes with extraordinary responsibilities. I found the acts of Bono extremely generous because I think he is the best singer producing angelic and pure sounds, his willingness to give to others with his time and money, and his international notabilities as an iconic mogul. The music of Bono can stir a blackened heart with fear and hate and implant hope and forgiveness. To me U2 music could lead a worldwide peace seminar. The song ââ¬Å"Beautiful Dayâ⬠, has to be my favorite because it just puts a smile on my face. Music like this appeals to me a great deal. The smooth sweet melody that makes me feel as though Iââ¬â¢m on a cloud of happiness makes this song standout. And some fans of U2 could agree that Bonoââ¬â¢s voice blends well with the musical sounds of the band. And their style has spun out so many great artist and musician. Like the band Coldplayââ¬â¢s music has greatly been influenced by Bonoââ¬â¢s band. Known for his contribution worldwide Bono is a mogul. There are few people in the music industry who have the presence of Bono. The Irish front man of U2 knows no limitations when it comes to fighting poverty and hunger, and is constantly in direct contact with world leaders and policy makers in his quest to make the world a better place. He raises money to donate to charities and he has held concerts to also raise money to give the proceeds to charities as well. Bono showed the world the pretty side to rock stardom. Not with all the beautiful ladies surrounding him or even a drunken night of trashing the occasional hotel. No he showed us an activist, someone trying to make a difference with his star power and commenting present. He is a powerful person media industry, because he tells other stars to help put and he gets his family involved. Celebrities and famou s musicians could say theyââ¬â¢ve given a large sum of money to a charity. But how many of them can honestly say they physically get out there and help with the cause? I know at least one that could definitely say theyââ¬â¢ve helped out in such a way. Yeah, you guessed it Oprah. Oh I mean Bono. And even his family helps as well.Like when he developed an education program with his wife, Ali, that used one-act plays and songs to spread information on health, hygiene, and other issues. Bono and his wife had to take time and careful planning to want to inform the natives in Africa of these hardships in their homeland. It shocks me how he is fine with the idea that he could get exposed to the same harmful diseases that the people in the villages have, but he wants to help those who arenââ¬â¢t exposed. This makes him a brave and courageous human being looking out for the well-being of others who arenââ¬â¢t as educated as he has been. ââ¬Å"One love, one blood. One life, you go t to do what you should. One life, with each other. Sisters, brothersâ⬠- One by U2. These simple lyrics from their most critically acclaimed song that states where Bonoââ¬â¢s inner most thought on how the world should be carried throughout everyday life. His message rings deep within me. We as a nation and as a world shouldnââ¬â¢t focus on our difference and help those in serious need. We are one! Bono shows us that there is still goodness and wholesome hearts in humanity. Helping with local charity organizations could be all that normal citizens can offer but thatââ¬â¢s more than nothing right?

The Balding, Toothless, Castaway â⬠with Wings
Marquez's A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings revolves on the genre of magic realism, where the unnatural events and characters are interspersed with the daily activities of human life. The story presents the two main topics of interest ââ¬â the old and withering winged man and the small community around it. Magical characters are of a natural thing when it comes to this genre and the response of the people around it implies a subtle reality where the realms of magic and the real world meet halfway. The story does not present a clear moral perspective or lesson in the end. Rather, it only presents a straightforward storytelling style designed to give the reader an opportunity to think of different subjective possibilities. There are no genuine expressions of shock or exclaim over the appearances of these characters. In this case, the angel appears as though it is a part of their reality wherein it is viewed as something ordinary. The characters in the story view the angel as divine, even in his pathetic physical state. However, after the town priest carefully examined the angel, they have deduced that he was an impostor, for he did not know the language of God.à Although angels are closely associated with Christian teachings, the divinity of the angel in the story is concentrated more on the magical rather than the religious aspect. The angelââ¬âa decrepit old man with half-plucked wings infected with parasitesââ¬âmay be related to the struggles that the human soul experiences in the eventuality of submission from the burden of mortal problems. The angel symbolizes decay and the slow death of the soul as he tries to relieve all his burdens. There are several notions on the symbolisms of the angel and its wings. First, as a general figure without cultural or religious basis, the angel may be regarded as simply a man with wings coming from some shipwreck across the sea. However, the story made no mention of the origins of the man, nor the reasons why he h as wings attached naturally to his body. As Pelayo and Elisinda observed, it was a toothless, balding old man that could have been easily mistaken as someone from a foreign country. But the wings make the character all the more mysterious. Thus, upon their consultation from their neighbor who knew the ââ¬Å"workings of life,â⬠the latter immediately responded that it was an angel sent to claim their sick child's life (Marquez 388).The experience of the townspeople with the angel also implies the contextual definition and nature of the community. They immediately impose in their consciousness that it is in fact an angel and quickly resort to several propositions in order to use this divine entity for the benefit of the human race. The simplest of the proposals is to make the angel as mayor of the world. The more radical ones suggest that he be made either as a five-star general in order to win all wars or as a genetically perfect parental source in order to make all human beings wise and conquer the universe. These reactions are the natural impulse of man to associate divinity on earth as a universal solution to mortal problems. This divinity is a structured action that delimits the capacity of human act as incompetent and incapable compared to the powers of the divine. Human beings, upon the proper circumstances, will willingly submit themselves to a higher order or a divine power in order to take over and create a perfect society. These propositions also deal with human freedom, where the townspeople entrusts their problems to divine solution. Although the divine effects were in a sense magical and comical (blind man who, instead of regaining vision, grows extra teeth), the townspeople did not view the angel's abilities as a proper divine capability because of the lack to completely heal people.

John Williams (Composer) Essay
Born in Queens, NY, in 1932, John Williams is arguably the most sought-after composer in Hollywood today. Musically, John Williams greatly influences my work and I find his grandiose, sweeping scores a benchmark to which I would like to progress to in my composing career. With 47 Academy Award nominations, he is the most nominated musician in Academy Awards history and the second-most nominated person of all-time (second to Walt Disney). However, Williamsââ¬â¢ rise to fame has been slow and it has taken many years for him to become the household name he is today. This encouraged me, as it showed that even a musical legend like John Williams started out small and worked his way up. During his time studying at Juilliard, he worked as a jazz pianist in New York clubs and after his studies, he moved to L.A. where he began working as a studio pianist for renowned composers, such as Henry Mancini and thus, some of his more comedic scores show Manciniââ¬â¢s influence. He soon gained notice in Hollywood for his versatility in composing jazz, piano and symphonic music. When composing a piece of music, I always look to John Williams for inspiration. One of his most famous techniques, and a technique I greatly appreciate, is the concept of leitmotif and his ability to write a fitting and recognisable piece of music to accompany a particular character; a favourite of mine being ââ¬Å"Princess Leiaââ¬â¢s Themeâ⬠from Stephen Spielbergââ¬â¢s space epic Star Wars. Williamsââ¬â¢ collaboration with Stephen Spielberg began when Spielberg was an all but unknown director, with the film The Sugarland Express and with the momentum of that success, they began a long collaboration together, working on films such as Indiana Jones, Schindlerââ¬â¢s List, Harry Potter, Jaws, Jurrasic Park and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, with the latterââ¬â¢s musical and film concepts being worked on simultaneously by Spielberg and Williams, an unusual step for a Hollywood film but typical of John Williams for pushing boundaries. His ability to write so many different styles of music, from Schindlerââ¬â¢s List to Indiana Jones, is a skill I which greatly inspires me, as well as his flair for conveying a particular theme; particularly in E.T, where his music depicts the childlike innocence of the film. He is a chameleon of sorts and his seemingly effortless approach to composing exquisite pieces of music for completely different genres makes him stand out amongst other notable musicians of our modern culture. He also takes a lot of inspiration from composers such as Richard Strauss and Wagner, and it is evident in the style of some of his work that he admires the grand, symphonic scores and neoromatic style of Golden Age composers Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold. When orchestras are performing his pieces, John Williams likes to be the one to conduct, adding more passion and depth to the music that wouldnââ¬â¢t be there if it were another conductor. I have viewed many videos on Youtube of orchestras playing Williamsââ¬â¢ creations and each time they have played with a fervour and respect that spawns a magical, tangible atmosphere, making the music stay with you long after the orchestra has stopped playing. The fact that his scores are not particularly technically difficult, yet still require a musician of great calibre to play them, shows how much effort Williams puts in to evoke the emotion and theme of the film. Star Wars is perhaps Williamsââ¬â¢ most famous and memorable scores and is the highest-grossing non-popular recording of all-time. The combined scores add up to more than 14 hours of orchestral music ââ¬â a magnitude unheard of by most musicians. It is this tenacity and dedication that I admire most about John Williams and is, most likely, what gave him the remarkable career he has enjoyed for so many years.

Microeconomic Economic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Microeconomic Economic - Essay Example Prioritizing needs help in determining which needs can be satisfied first within the limited budget by postponing the less important ones. At a national level, the budgeting activities help in putting the governmentââ¬â¢s revenues into adequate spending areas. These are then broken down into provincial and state budgets making the allocation more precise and directed, increasing the chances of more effective use. The phenomenon of demand and supply and their effect on price determine the feasibility of each transaction in oneââ¬â¢s personal life. By understanding the basic laws of demand and supply, I understand that the goods in demand are likely to be high priced when in season and vice versa. This helps me make smarter decisions in the day to day life. For example appliances like air conditioners are likely to be on discounted deals in winters, making it feasible for me to purchase one in winters instead of in summers. Similarly, shopping for jackets in summers helps me save a bundle on shopping for the same apparel in season. When the price affects the demand level, this is known as elastic demand. Similarly the goods whose demand is not affected by slight change in price are called inelastic. In my daily life i come across many goods that I can do without and pursue cheaper alternatives. However, being loyal to a couple of brands, I give price moderate weightage in the whole buying transaction. On the other hand, the evident inflation for necessities reflects the masses helplessness and constant demand no matter how much the prices fluctuate. Opportunity cost refers to the cost of letting one alternative go for the opting of the other. This implies prioritization and weighing the loss against the gain of each alternative. For example, the choice of working professionally instead of studying further or comparing the pros

The impact of the Financial Crisis on Banking Industry Research Paper
The impact of the Financial Crisis on Banking Industry - Research Paper Example In 2009, the ââ¬Å"Federal Deposit Insurance Corporationâ⬠failed almost 305 banks. Even though this is comparatively small proportion of the entire banks, the tendency that this reveals is the actual reason for concern. This amount is greater than 12 times the amount, 25, which failed in the year 2008. Among these banks which were forced to shut their doors in 2008 was ââ¬Å"Washington Mutualâ⬠; the leading bank to date which has been compelled to shut their doors. Nevertheless, they were capable to get away total amount of liquidation by being engrossed by ââ¬Å"JP Morgan Chaseâ⬠. This benefited the ââ¬Å"JP Morgan Chaseâ⬠since this gave them a trail on the west-shore which they had been requesting for some time (Bexley et al., 2011, p. 2). Due to these negative externalities, the problem of credit crunch has been generated which has reduced the amounts of investment and investable funds across the globe. Also the problem of subprime lending has also been a ggravated in global economies, mainly in US which has reduced the banking transactions in the country (Bexley et al., 2011, p. 6). ... to this high level of inflation, consumers are not getting capable of purchasing costliest goods and services and hence business organisations which are engaged in production of these goods and services are leaving the industry. Again this is reducing the level of income in the country and hence the level of demand for necessary goods and service. The Fed is expecting to have a subdued in the next few years because of weaker level of real economic activities prevailing in the country. But the Fed is expecting that the rate of inflation will remain unresponsive in newt few years due to the fact the American economy is still under the curse of financial and economic crises situations (Minutes of the Federal Open Market Committee, 2011, p. 1). Future solutions: Again, it is expected by the researchers that the rate of interest will remain comparatively low as well as stable in the next year following the rapid growth of developing countries. This increasing growth of countries such as I ndia and China will increase the volume of trade in favor of USA. Also the corporate bonds and the share market are expected to be much stable in the next year than it is now. These aspects are expected to improve the performance of the banking sector in the US (Elwell, 2011, p. 4). The rate of interest on ââ¬Å"91-Day Treasury Billsâ⬠in the next year is expected to be 0.2% and that of ââ¬Å"10-year treasury notes to be 3.5% (Fiscal Year 2013: Analytical Perspective: Budget of the U.S. Government, 19). These improvements in the economic variables of the country is expected to create significant amount of positive effect on the increment of the level of private as well as public consumption spending of the country. Consumption spending is most likely to remain the most crucial part of the

Assessing the potential impact of institutional investors on corporate Dissertation
Assessing the potential impact of institutional investors on corporate governance in China - Dissertation Example .................................................................... p.10 Literature review ..................................................................... p.10 Conclusions ..................................................................... p.31 References ..................................................................... p.37 ABSTRACT Examples are given pertaining to the development and present situation of Western institutional investors. Also under discussion is the practice of Western/Anglo institutional investors towards an increasing participation in the corporate governance in a proactive way. The methods and procedures of institutional investors participation in corporate governance is described, with American and British examples ââ¬â and how these institutions pertain to China. Analysis is given describing the development of the corporate culture that leads to a more active role in governance, and how the assumptions thereof have evolved over time. Both the p ositive and the negative of institutional investors on corporate governance are described, with respect to a term corporate interests. Challenges relating to foreign investments in China are described in this context. The current status of investors and the losses they have suffered due to transitional effects in the Chinese economy are extrapolated based upon a shifting legal and financial landscape as China modernizes its economy. Recommendations to alleviate these concerns are proposed. INTRODUCTION The advent of high finance and its utilization in the operations of Incorporated business organizations created a situation many decades ago in which it was recognized that owners and shareholders need not always see eye to eye. The directors that oversee functional operations over day-to-day matters do not always have the same vested interests as the shareholding owners of the corporation. The interests of operational control may not match the objectives of other individuals interest ed in a slow and steady growth of assets and equity. But the considerable benefits of ownership by way of investment have been recognized for nearly the entirety of the 20th century, thus investors by necessity must gain certain rights and privileges. The role of these investors is an evolving understanding that balances the nuances of organizational agility against long-term growth. Theories of corporate governance must be developed to define the responsibilities of investors and the degree to which they can influence operations without stressing corporate resources beyond their ability to perform. (Davis, 2002) Possible examples might include the director/executive officer, who may have founded the business wanting to maintain control possibly for sentimental reasons ââ¬â the business might have been in his family for many years. Or, the business might be a valuable source of jobs for a particular local community. But the investors that can help a business rise to the world st age might feel that their interests are best served through mergers or takeovers that permit a favorable return on investments based upon various stock options and projected share values. Certain individuals may perceive a loss of livelihood, and thus oppose measures that will increase the profits of those that have injected vast amounts of capital to make the business what it is. Arbitration and compromise are necessities. OVERVIEW Over three decades institutional investors have superseded private individual shareholders in the world's most important capital

How did the worsening of ideological relations between Mao Zedong and Essay - 1
How did the worsening of ideological relations between Mao Zedong and Nikita Krushchev lead to the sini-soviet split in the 1960s - Essay Example The second fight was against the nationalist Kuomintang (Marks 10). The Nationalist Kuomintang was led by Chiang kai Shek. The overlapping wars persuaded Mao to ignore the advices and directions by Stalin. During the Second World War (1939-1945) Mao followed the lead of Stalin and agreed on the Joint Anti-Japanese Coalition with leader of Nationalist Kuomintang, Chiang Kai Shek (Hershberg 149). The treaty of friendship was signed with Nationalist Kuomintang in 1945. After 3 months of Japanââ¬â¢s surrender Stalin broke the treaty (Li 4). In 1950, Mao Signed Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship & Alliance (Li 409). The alliance resulted in $300Mio loan at a very minimal interest rate along with the military alliance for the period of 30 years. In 1954, after the death of Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev met Mao and formally handed over Port Arther base to China (Khoo 4). The Post Stalin policies by Khrushchev were in conflict with the mind set of Mao. The reason was that Khrushchev deno unced Stalin through his speeches. In 1956, Khrushchev developed relationship with Yugoslavia. The leader of Yugoslavia Joseph Broz Tito was denounced by Stalin. Mao was the supporter of Stalinââ¬â¢s ideology. Khrushchev tried to dismantle Maoââ¬â¢s support of USSR. Khrushchev met with the US president on 1959 to improve the Soviet-America relationships. Khrushchev also tried to decrease the tensions with the Western World in the Cold war. Ultimately, the ideological debate between the two parties i.e. Russia & China were majorly concerned with the peaceful co-existence with the capitalist world. The major reason of the Sino-Soviet split was the national difference. The political line of Mao was totally opposed to that of Khrushchev. Therefore, the conflict in political perspectives between the two parties leads to the creation of two rival formations internationally. The issue was not explicitly considered as the national difference. The issue was believed to be the
